Perinatal Mood Disorder / Postpartum Depression and Anxiety Prevention in South Florida
Let’s talk a little about Postpartum Depression and Anxiety and what you can do to prevent it. Be aware of your risk factors (below) and keep watch for any feelings of PPD.
I’m not just saying this so that you will join my class. Go take Prenatal Yoga anywhere – there are several classes in the area. Having said that . . . one of the best things you could do to prevent PPD is to sign up for Prenatal Yoga.
This is how it will help you . . .
- Exercise, rest, and a good diet go very far towards preventing PPD. The trick is finding time to do all of that but consider it a necessity if you have several risk factors.
- Practice Relaxation and Stress Reduction techniques. You learn these in Prenatal Yoga!
- Ask for help when you need it from your partner, friends and family.
- Get involved in a prenatal group or in a mom’s group after you have the baby either online or in person. Both help! Join the Yogafairy™ Message Board (coming soon) for a mama group that is going to support you!
Baby Blues vs. Postpartum Depression and Anxiety
The Baby Blues feels more positive than negative in general and gets better within a couple of weeks after birth. In contrast, Postpartum Depression and Anxiety (PPD) feels more negative than positive, like you’re sad all the time or going crazy and wish you had never given birth. It hits about 20% of new moms and is the #1 complication of childbirth. It can hit anytime in the first year after birth and often hits when the baby is around 5-6 months old. Below are common symptoms and risk factors. The more risk factors you have, the more chance you have of experiencing PPD.
If Prevention measures listed above don’t help, please get some professional help so that your experience of motherhood is happier and better. If you find yourself looking around wondering why everyone is so happy (and why aren’t you?), then you should get some help. Know that this isn’t your fault and you are not to blame. Postpartum Depression and Anxiety is treatable. It is not the type of thing where you can go to dinner or have a glass of wine and feel better (often what your doctor will recommend to you).
Recovery is gradual. You need to seek help from someone who is experienced in working with PPD. Research is very clear that talking with a counselor/therapist really does improve symptoms and eventually helps the depression and/or anxiety lift.
