Just a reminder that there is prenatal yoga class tomorrow, Monday, January 16th  (MLK Day) in Hallandale Beach.

Let’s talk about Sciatic pain / Leg Pain and Pregnancy. I have a great handout that a prenatal chiropractor and Yogafairy Mama prepared for the class. What does Sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy feel like? Usually it feels like a tingling, shooting pain that starts in your tushie and shoots down the leg. It may be on one side or both. If it’s severe, you’ll have difficulty turning over in bed, walking, and standing.

I had sciatic pain badly during my pregnancy with Eva. It felt like I was paralyzed at night and would break in half if I tried to turn over. When I google this, most of the websites say to lie on the side that doesn’t have the pain. How is that supposed to actually help the pain decrease though? You may get temporary relief when you’re actually lying down but that is even questionable. In fact, a study from New England Journal of Medicine (February 11, 1999) found that rest offered no benefit. That gentle movement (ummmm . . .YOGA!) was better.

Luckily, Vivian who is a specialist in pregnancy chiropractic from Amazing Births and Beyond kept me walking during my pregnancy with Eva. And of course I did Yoga . . . yep, Yoga. Doing Fire Log even once a day will help Sciatic Nerve pain during your pregnancy.

We have several poses in Yoga that address leg pain that’s sciatic pain during pregnancy. I hear consistent feedback from students that the poses help decrease their sciatic pain during pregnancy. So, yay – go Yoga is what I say. If you want to read more about it, one of the few articles that I found helpful is at Pregnancy.org – “Sciatic Nerve Pain during Pregnancy.”

Just a reminder that there is prenatal yoga class tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 28th, in Cooper City.  Bring a friend for free – pregnant or non-pregnant – both o.k.! It’s the last class of 2011 and what a year it’s been!

Yogafairy has gone from one location in 2011 to three. Another location will start in February 2012. It’s grown from just me teaching to four of us all together.  My mission is to bring more Prenatal Yoga to more Mamas! O.k., it’s a little more complicated than that, but not much! I want you all to have easier pregnancies, better births, more community (meaning more mama friends – they’re soooo important!).

I hope the New Year brings that for more women, regardless of whether I’m involved or not. We all need “easier” in our lives from time to time. The “harder” helps us grow and change and transform. But the “easier” is always welcome respite.

Happy, happy New Year to all of you!

Eva's 6th Birthday

My youngest’s daughter’s birthday was the 14th. She was born on the same day as Mr. Iyengar, who is the creator of Iyengar Yoga. He celebrated his 93rd birthday on Wednesday and Eva celebrated her 6th. The day she was born, my yoga teacher, Ruth Ann Bradley (owner of the Yoga Institute of Broward), said, “It’s an auspicious day!”

Yes, it is! As I told my Wednesday class, every minute of my labor was worth the gift that Eva is to me. A lot of the time as a mother, you feel like you’re going crazy! You get overwhelmed, stressed out, hungry! But there are also those times that are just filled with joy and love and happiness.

A 6-year-old waking you up at 6:30 a.m. on her birthday soooo excited is one of those beautiful moments to hang on to. It’s also one of those moments to say to them, “Yes! I love you! It’s your birthday and it’s one of the happiest days of my life too!” I hope the same for you and your children.
